The artists featured in VISIONS OF NEVER are among the most talented to work in the field in the past 40 years — the "artist's artists." The included works consist of both illustration and personal paintings, covering every facet of the science fiction/fantasy genre. The vast majority have never been collected in book form, and many have never before been published.

Accompanying the images are essays on each artist, comprised as much as possible from the artists' own words, or those of close associates. These essays provide a feel for the artist as a person, just as the images provide a feel for their artistic vision. Artists include Paul Lehr, Don Ivan Punchatz, Richard Bober, Rohb Ruppel, Marc Fishman, Mark Zug.

HAL FOSTER
Prince of Illustrators ~ Father of the Adventure Strip
By Brian M. Kane
Signed Limited Hardcover and Softcover Edition
Introduction by James Bama

Limited Hardcover SIGNED by author Brian Kane & legendary Doc Savage illustrator JAMES BAMA

james_bama_doc_savage-squashed
In the first comprehensive biography of Hal Foster, author Brian M. Kane examines the 70-year career of one of the greatest illustrators of the twentieth century. Superman was modeled after Foster's drawings of Tarzan, Flash Gordon's Alex Raymond borrowed compositions from Prince Valiant and thousands of artists, including the famous contemporary Western painter James Bama, count Foster among their greatest influences.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1892 of a seafaring family, Hal naturally took to the sea. At the age of eight he paddled a twelve-foot plank across Halifax Harbor to the consternation of large Cunard liners. In his youth he was a catalogue artist, a trapper, a professional boxer, a gold prospector, and a hunter-guide in the uncharted forests of Canada. In 1921 with a wife and two children to support he peddled his one-speed bicycle 1,000 miles across dirt and gravel roads from Winnipeg to Chicago to attend the Art Institute and later find permanent employment.

The young illustrator's work appeared on the covers of Popular Mechanics and in hundreds of magazines for clients such as Northwest Paper, Jekle Margarine, Southern Pacific Railroad and Illinois Pacific Railroad. In 1929 Foster illustrated the first newspaper adaptation of Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The comic strip was the first of its kind and it was Foster's sense of realism, composition, draftsmanship, and understanding of fluid anatomy that would forever mark him as "The Father of the Adventure Strip."

The famous newspaper tycoon, William Randolph Hearst, wanted Foster and made the artist an unheard of offer. If Foster would leave Tarzan and come to work for Hearst's King Features Syndicate he could do anything he wanted and have complete ownership of the new series. The first episode of Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur appeared on February 13, 1937. Foster would chronicle the exploits of his greatest creation for the next 43 years.

Prince Valiant became one of the most successful comic series of all time, winning the prestigious Banshees' "Silver Lady" award and both the National Cartoonists Society's coveted "Reuben" award and "Gold Key" award. The strip also generated merchandise outside of the Sunday funnies such as toy knights complete with castle, a board game, paper dolls, candy bars and even a briefcase. In 1954, 20th Century Fox took Foster's creation to the silver screen in Prince Valiant, directed by Henry Hathaway, starring Robert Wagner, James Mason and Janet Leigh. Foster's fame led to him being the subject of an episode of the popular TV series, This is Your Life which aired April 14, 1954. At age 73, Foster was elected to membership in Great Britain's Royal Society of Arts - an honor very few Americans can claim. Foster's classic portraya l of Britain's history inspired England's King Edward, who abdicated to become Edward, The Duke of Windsor, to call Prince Valiant the "greatest contribution to English literature in the past hundred years."

Bernie Wrightson (Foreword),
Michael Wm Kaluta (Afterword)

Legendary artist Frank Frazetta once called Hugo Award and World Fantasy Award winner Jones "the great living painter". Jones and Frazetta were the top two heroic fantasy book cover artists of the 1960's and '70's. As well as sci-fi and fantasy, Jones famously contributed to 1972-75 issues of National Lampoon with the innovative comics feature "Idyl", and was a member of The Studio in New York City with contemporaries, Barry Windsor-Smith, Bernie Wrightson and Michael Wm, Kaluta. The Studio became the subject of a landmark book from Dragon's Dream in 1979. By the '80's Jones relocated to the Woodstock area to pursue Fine Art and, in 1998 began gender transition via hormone replacement therapy.

This book catalogs all published Jones work: book covers; National Lampoon / Idyl; comics; The Studio (with Wrightson, Windsor-Smith and Kaluta); prints; portfolios; and more.

The Alluring Art of Margaret Brundage
Queen of Pulp Pin-Up Art
Authors and compilers Stephen D. Korshak and J. David Spurlock

Starting in 1932, Margaret Brundage, wife of leftist revolutionary Slim Brundage, -- who she met at the wildly-bohemian Dil Pickle Club during the Chicago Renaissance -- forever changed the look of Fantasy and Horror with her alluring, sensationalistic covers for the legendary pulp magazine, Weird Tales. Brundage, whose art contemporaries include Virgil Finlay and Hannes Bok, is unique as she was the first female cover artist of the pulp era. Decades before the gothic fetish craze, Brundage's lush, provocative paintings, which frequently featured smoldering, semi-nude young women bearing whips, became a focus of acute attention and controversy. At the very peak of the notorious pulp's classic run, the magazine's appeal was due as much to Brundage's covers as to the stories inside by famous authors H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch and Conan creator, Robert E. Howard. Long before Frazetta, it was Brundage who was the very 1st Conan cover artist. The Alluring Art of Margaret Brundage is the premier book devoted to this noted artist and features all of her Weird Tales and Conan covers.

JOE KUBERT:
How to Draw from Life

Written & Illustrated by Joe Kubert

JOE KUBERT!...the legendary Hawkman, Tarzan, Enemy Ace, Batman, Sgt Rock artist and critically acclaimed graphic novelist of Tor, Abraham Stone, Fax From Sarajevo, Sgt Rock, and Yossel , also founded the first and only accredited school devoted solely to the art of cartoon graphics. The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, Inc. in Dover, New Jersey has since produced many of today's leading cartoonists including Kubert sons Adam and Andy Kubert.

In 1998 Kubert expanded his career as an art instructor with a series of correspondence courses, Kubert's first instructional book for major bookstore release, Superheroes (1999) was aimed at a young audience interested in cartooning. It was followed by the instructional kit, Joe Kubert's Comic Book Studio, (2002).

In his new book, JOE KUBERT: How to Draw from Life, designed for more mature art students, professionals and enthusiasts, Kubert presents a wealth of his own drawings from nude models spanning his years as an artist and art instructor. This book is accompanied by Kubert's commentary on drawing from life. Subjects include gesture drawing, contour drawing, the figure in motion, short studies, long studies, drawing women, the figure in perspective, form and structure, anatomy, and lighting. This is surely the most significant How-To book from a major comics creator this year.
